TV’s most popular animated show for kids, Spongebob Squarepants, is turning 10 this year and Nickelodeon is celebrating all weekend long. The network will air eleven new episodes as well as countdowns of the fan’s favorite episodes. In addition to the bash on Nickelodeon, a documentary about Spongebob debuts Tuesday on Nickelodeon’s sister station, VH1.
Spongebob has become a pop culture phenomenon for all ages. Adults, and not just ones with kids, have helped make Spongebob Squarepants a cash cow that has generated $8 billion in merchandising revenue for Nickelodeon. The show is seen in 25 different languages and counts two world leaders as fans, President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who say they watch with their children.
Since it first aired, over 125 episodes ago, the show has had several big name guest stars too, including David Bowie, LeBron James, Whoopi Goldberg and Ray Liotta. And this weekend, more celebrates will participate in Spongebob mania as they pick their favorite episodes for a special top ten countdown.
