The fall TV season is just kicking off but I am going to go out on a limb and saying right now that Glee is the best the new show to premiere this year. Fox first aired the show’s pilot last spring and finally showed Glee’s second episode, which completely lived up to the hype, last night. The show has been held up on the same pedestal as Mad Men and 30 Rock by critics who love the show’s originality and I’m betting they even love the show’s song and dance numbers though they probably won’t admit it.
In the pilot, William McKinley High’s Spanish teacher, Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison), committed to coaching the school’s underdog of a glee club with only six members. In order for his gleers to compete, they must find 6 more members, a difficult task, especially considering his nemesis, cheer coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch), is quick to remind him how pathetic his little choir is.
In last night’s episode, Will unveiled his plan to get a few new recruits, perform Chic’s “Le Freak” at the upcoming pep assembly. He tried to convince the kids that the song would be a crowd pleaser but to them it was too old and too dorky. What they wanted was something modern, something more like Kayne West. The group’s rehearsal of “Gold Digger” turned out to be one the show’s best numbers. It also tied in the subplot about Will’s wife, Terri (Jessalyn Gilsig), who is pregnant and refuses to bring her baby home to a “used home,” forcing Will to make an offer on a newly built, out-of-their-price-range house instead.
In an attempt to please his wife, Will picks up a shift as a janitor which also gives him some alone time with Emma (Jayma Mays), the school’s guidance counselor with such a big crush on Will that she helps him clean classrooms, even though she’s a total germaphobe.
