Causing quite a little stir on the internet. Joss Whedons Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog has quietly become a minor internet sensation. According to the Wikipedia page, the plan was to “create something small and inexpensive, yet professionally done, in a way that would circumvent the issues that were being protested during the strike” I think that’s just fantastic, don’t you? Whedon, a lifetime fan of comic books, has been pretty active in the online media space. He occasionally releases free webcomics on his darkhorse page, and has used viral marketing methods for Serenity and other shows he produces

It’s the video blog  of an aspiring Evil Super Genius. He wants to rule the world, and he gives us updates. In the first episode he’s working on a freeze ray. He’s clearly not very good at his job quite yet, and he’s out to prove himself to the world, and a girl. Oh yeah, did I mention the fact that it’s a musical? Neil Patrick Harris plays Dr. Horrible, and nails it. Has anyone else noticed the fact that this guy seems to creep into the public awareness every time we seem to forget about him.  Since his beginning in Dougie Howser M.D. he’s been seen in the Horold and Kumar Movies, StarShip Troopers, How I Met Your Mother on television, nearly yearly on Broadway, video games, voice overs, and commercials.

There are three acts to the Musical, following Dr. Horrible’s  path toward becoming part of the Evil League of Evil. As far as cheesed out Internet Tragi-comic musicals go, this is the best. I know, it’s a niche, but even if there were others, this one would probably still be the best.

On the website, it’s brought to you by Hulu for free (with commercials), but you could also go and buy it on itunes for the low low price of five bucks for all three acts. This is something I might actually buy. Once you watch it, show others, this is a model that needs to be supported. Maybe someday we’ll be getting movies of this quality on a regular basis for free.
