It was announced at this year’s CES (sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association) that the new Vizio HD Televisions will have a number of web widgets built in.
Vizio has since announced that it has added several more widgets to the line-up including some of the most popular services on the internet like eBay, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon Video on Demand, Blockbuster On Demand, Flickr, Netflix, Pandora, Rhapsody and Rallypoint Sports. These services will be directly accessible from the TV screen, there will be no need to log onto your computer to check an auction or tweet you reaction to your favorite show.
Showtime, Web video channel Revision3, Internet radio site Radiotime, and video-on-demand service Vudu, will also be accessible directly from the TV via the Yahoo TV Widgets engine. The Via Connected service will come installed in Vizio XVT series TVs, which will be available this fall. The XVT sets have built-in 802.11(n) Wi-Fi, which allows the TV to connect to the owner’s wireless Internet service.
LG, Panasonic, Samsung, and Sony also showcased similar TVs at CES. This growing trend seems to be the way technology is moving, integrating web platforms and traditional TV will certainly be the wave of the future. It looks like the trend will even extend to gaming systems. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 already features Netflix Watch Instantly, and later this fall will also offer Facebook and Twitter.
