Film critic Roger Ebert is going to make a rare appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show to show off his new “voice”.
Ebert lost the ability to speak after being treated for cancer of the jaw. But, a Scottish company has helped him regain a voice that his friends, family and fans will recognize.
Computer programmers from CereProc have created a program that captured his voice from DVD movie commentary tracks he recorded before losing his voice and now, he can type what he wants to say and people will hear a voice that sounds remarkably like his own. The company was able to take the digital recordings of Ebert speaking and turn them into his new text-to-audio voice.
Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun Times that the voice will be heard publicly for the first time when he appears on Oprah to predict Oscar winners on a segment of the show airing Tuesday.
He says he may be able to use the voice for radio and webcasts in the future.
