ABC’s Modern Family, Fox’s Glee and HBO’s In Treatment all won Peabody Awards today. The George Foster Peabody Awards, under the guidance of the University of Georgia’s journalism department, recognize the achievement and public service by TV and radio stations, networks, producing organizations, individuals and the World Wide Web.
“Our selections demonstrate that great work available in 2009 varied widely and appealed to viewers and listeners with very different tastes, interests and concerns,” said Horace Newcomb, who is the director of the Peabody Awards.
Newcomb announced 36 winners in carious categories today though the awards ceremony won’t take place until May 17. Diane Sawyer will host the event in New York City.
HBO’s The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, CBS’ The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (featuring a guest appearance by Archbishop Desmond Tutu) and two reports by Steve Kroft, “Sabotaging the System” and “The Cost of Dying,” which aired on CBS’ 60 Minutes also won Peabody Awards.
Thrilla in Manila, an HBO documentary about the last of three legendary heavyweight bouts between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier was also honored.
