NBC canceled plans for a Will & Grace spinoff series after the Friends spinoff, Joey, flopped in the ratings.

The network had intended to launch a new show focused on the character of Karen Walker, played by Megan Mullally, after Will & Grace ended its run in 2006.

“I was going to do a spinoff but then they spun off a character from Friends, Joey, that did not go very well,” Mullally told Digital Spy. “They decided they wanted me to host a talk show instead, which also didn’t go particularly well. Although it wasn’t the show, it just wasn’t the right timing.”

Mullally also denied rumors that the proposed spinoff included Karen’s sidekick Jack, saying: “I was approached to do a spinoff with just Karen, not Karen and Jack. I don’t think Sean [Hayes] wanted to do [it] anyway.”

Joey starred Friends’ Matt LeBlanc as Joey Tribbiani. In its first season the show averaged 10.2 million viewers but its last season numbers were 7.1 million.

Show executive producer Kevin Bright says NBC executives, the studio and other producers collaborated and quickly ruined the show.

“On Friends Joey was a womanizer but we enjoyed his exploits. He was a solid friend, a guy you knew you could count on,” Bright says. “Joey was deconstructed to be a guy who couldn’t get a job, couldn’t ask a girl out. He became a pathetic, mopey character. I felt he was moving in the wrong direction, but I was not heard.”

LeBlanc is set to team with David Crane and Jeffrey Klarik for the series entitled Episodes.

Episodes will revolve around a British couple whose television program is turned into an Americanized sitcom that stars LeBlanc.

Episodes is scheduled to debut this year on the BBC and Showtime.
