The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Todd Haynes’ Mildred Pierce is coming to HBO.
The network just picked up the movie, starring Kate Winslet, which will air as a 5-hour mini-series.
Haynes is directing the film, an adaptation of James M. Cain’s classic novel centering on Mildred Pierce Beragon (Winslet), “a proud single mother struggling to earn her daughter’s love during the Great Depression in middle-class Los Angeles.”
Haynes co-wrote the script with Jon Raymond and it will be produced by Haynes, Pamela Koffler and Christine Vachon of Killer Films and John Wells. Casting for the movie is underway and production will begin in April in New York City.
This is the second film adaptation of Cain’s novel. In 1945 Joan Crawford an Academy Award for playing the role of Midred Pierce in that year’s version.
Wislet won the Oscar for her role in The Reader last year but is not a stranger to TV. She began her career 16 years ago on British television and in 2005, she made an appearance on Ricky Gervais’ comedy Extras.
Haynes’ writing/directing credits include I’m Not There and Far From Heaven.
