So there we were, watching one of the most important moments in our nation’s history. Millions gathered at the Capitol to watch the inauguration of president-elect Barack Obama, and the hype was not misplaced. It truly was a magnificent event, and naturally, like all such events, everyone was looking for mistakes. Everything had to be perfect, and networks and viewers alike were waiting to see if everything went as smooth as silk.
As it turns out, just about everything did, with two exceptions. First, Aretha Franklin’s hat..just wow. I thought it was gonna weigh down her head so she couldn’t get up to sing. Fashion jokes aside (and there have been many, but she’s like the original diva, so how can she really do any wrong?), there was also a slight flub when Obama took the oath of office.
I, like many viewers at the time, had thought that Obama had stuttered or messed up the oath for a brief moment. Instead, it was actually Chief Justice Roberts who incorrectly recited the oath. He should have said “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Unfortunately Mr. Robers tacked faithfully onto the end…here’s the transcript.
ROBERTS: I, Barack Hussein Obama…
OBAMA: I, Barack…
ROBERTS: … do solemnly swear…
OBAMA: I, Barack Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear…
ROBERTS: … that I will execute the office of president to the United States faithfully…
OBAMA: … that I will execute…
ROBERTS: … faithfully the office of president of the United States…
OBAMA: … the office of president of the United States faithfully…
ROBERTS: … and will to the best of my ability…
OBAMA: … and will to the best of my ability…
ROBERTS: … preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
OBAMA: … preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
ROBERTS: So help you God?
OBAMA: So help me God.
ROBERTS: Congratulations, Mr. President.
Woops!
