The cable signal passes through my cable box first (where, I assume, the signals are unencrypted) and moves on to my computer for recording. The HD channels are being recorded, but the quality isn't so great, and the picture is scrunched in the middle. Adjusting settings in Windows Media Center doesn't help. Is it possible that the cable co. or box is distorting the signals to force me to rent a DVR from them? Thanks!

Just got a fancy “media center” computer with an HDTV Hauppaige tuner card. The cable signal passes through my cable box first (where, I assume, the signals are unencrypted) and moves on to my computer for recording.
