Last night, the final episode of “Flight of the Conchords” debuted on HBO to little fanfare. The episode seemed like the usual fare, Bret and Jermaine were evicted from their apartment for paying in New Zealand currency instead of U.S. dollars and were forced to move in with Mel. In the meantime, Murray revealed he has been working on an Off-Broadway play about Bret and Jermaine’s life. In one last attempt at super stardom in the U.S., the two perform the play not realizing there are two New Zealand officials there who promptly deport them back to the homeland. Apparently they weren’t exactly in the country legally.
Last night’s episode only included one song, not counting the improv jams at the opening and close of the show. The song was a good one though and if this is how they chose to go out, they went out on top. The song, titled “Petrov, Yelyena and Me”, tells the story of Bret being lost at sea with two cannibals. Disturbing and hilarious at the same time, “Yelyena” captures the best of FotC in one simple melody.
HBO never acknowledged the episode as FotC’s last, instead, advertisements called it the season finale. But last year Bret and Jermaine made it clear there would be no season three, unless, maybe, the jokes on us?
Even if this is their last show on HBO, it won’t be the last we see of the Conchords. The duo embarks on a spring tour of the U.S this month, they have a new comedy album out, and Jermaine has parts in two upcoming movies, “Despicable Me” and “Gentlemen Broncos”. Whatever they do next, there are sure to be legions of FotC fans waiting for it, even if its a sitcom set in a field in New Zealand. Here’s a look at what may or may not be the final scene of “Flight of the Conchords”:
