The CW has issued early series renewals to five shows — freshman hit The Vampire Diaries, Josh Schwartz’s Gossip Girl, sophomore soap 90210, veteran drama, by CW standards, Supernatural and popular America’s Next Top Model.

All will return next fall…except for maybe Melrose Place.

Thanks to the popularity of fang-y teen melodrama, Vampire Diaries quickly became The CW’s most-watched show, averaging 4.6 million viewers. On Thursdays, Vampire Diaries has helped Supernatural, which has improved over last season among the CW’s target demographic of women aged 18-34.

Missing from the list is the reboot of Melrose Place, which is not expected to return; Smallville is trying to land a 10th season; and bubble shows One Tree Hill and Life Unexpected are still in question.

Regarding Smallville, CW president Dawn Ostroff told me she was feeling optimistic about renewal chances. “I’m really pleased with the show,” she said. “Creatively, I think they’ve done a great job. And the ratings are [strong] on Friday night. I have to commend [the producers]… It’s not easy in season 9 to keep a show fresh. And you know what I think? The fans have really liked the show this season. I don’t know which way we’ll go, but if you would’ve asked me [earlier whether it would end this season] I would’ve said, ‘Oh, probably.’ But I can’t say that now.”

Gossip Girl has struggled in the ratings during its third season and the show has been off the air for a few months, waiting to return March 8th. Despite that, the show is hugely popular in social media and online.  Meanwhile, 90210 had a lackluster second season paired with the Melrose Place reboot bomb.

Menawhile, One Tree Hill and Smallville, two of the networks long-running shows, are consistently strong in ratings  One Tree Hill routinely beat Gossip Girl on Monday nights while Smallville is the CW’s third highest-rated show behind The Vampire Diaries and ANTM.
