Craig Ferguson enjoys mixing it up a bit as the host of  The Late Late Show. He once continued the show in the dark after a power outage in the studio and celebrated his 1,000th episode by doing an entire broadcast as a puppet.

Tuesday night, Ferguson tested the waters again by doing the entire show without a studio audience. As he explained in the monologue, the recent late-night shake up made him think about old school late night hosts like Tom Snyder, who didn’t have an audience.

Ferguson chose to have just one guest for the whole hour, comedian Stephen Fry.  The two have been friends since they met in London back in the 1980s. “I’m honored to be a little white mouse in your laboratory experiment,” Fry told him. “(CBS) is going, ‘Will it work? Is it possible to talk to someone without people whooping in the background?’”

The pair made the most of their time together, discussing everything from drugs to Twitter to The Situation.
