Comedy Central is not going to renew The Jeff Dunham Show for a second season despite its record-breaking premiere.
“Currently there are no plans to produce a second season of The Jeff Dunham Show,” Steve Albani, a rep for Comedy Central said in a statement.
The show, which features the comedian and a team of puppets, premiered in October with 5.3 million viewers. It was the the most-watched series premiere in Comedy Central history. But, the ratings for the series dropped steadily over the season. The season finale earlier this month drew only 1.3 million viewers.
The series was also panned by critics. The web site videogum.com said, “‘The Jeff Dunham Show’ Is the Worst Thing in the Entire World.” The New York Times wrote, “Offensiveness is a mutable thing, especially on television, where everything is interchangeable: a Lewis Black joke could be a Jay Leno joke could be a Jeff Dunham joke.”
Although the series is over, Dunham’s tenure with the network will continue. Albani said Comedy Central will move forward with other aspects of Dunham’s multi-platform deal, which he signed earlier this year, including a live tour, stand-up special, DVDs and other consumer products.
