Before cable television was available, people were limited to watching a few select channels on their TVs. When cable companies began to distribute their content across hundreds of premium channels, the public quickly subscribed. Today, millions of people pay monthly fees to have the option of watching hundreds of programs on their televisions. But, another shift in the landscape has recently happened. Software has emerged that allows you to watch and record live TV streams on your computer. Below, you’ll discover why more and more people are using this software, how it saves you money and how you can get started watching your favorite programs on your PC.

Popular Software For Recording TV

There are a few different ways to watch and record television programs on your PC. The easiest way involves software that eliminates the need for extra hardware. For example, an application called MyNewSatellite TV works by downloading broadcast streams from the internet. By simply downloading the software and connecting online through your normal internet connection, MyNewSatellite TV provides access to over 2,500 different channels around the world.

Satellite TV For PC: 2008 Elite Edition is another software package that provides the same service. One simple download launches you onto a platform from which you can record and watch live TV shows on thousands of channels from over 100 countries.

Why Watch TV On Your PC?

Recording and watching TV on your PC provides several benefits. First, you’ll have access to an unprecedented level of content. You’ll have the opportunity to view live TV programs from other countries. Second, you’ll be able to watch cable television shows that would normally require a costly subscription. Many people pay nearly $100 each month to access their cable TV programs. “TV on your PC” software allows you to watch your favorite programs while eliminating the monthly fees.

Third, watching TV on your PC provides a level of mobility that is otherwise impossible. You can record live TV on your laptop and watch your TV shows wherever you happen to be. Lastly, having access to an expansive menu of programs from around the world provides a deeper understanding of cultures in other nations. From sports and religion to politics and music, you’ll be able to see firsthand how others live.

Benefits Of Using Software

Without software such as MyNewSatellite TV and Satellite TV For PC, you would need to install a TV tuner card inside your computer. But, doing so is high-maintenance. Plus, many people aren’t comfortable opening their computer to install components. Downloading “TV on your PC” software eliminates the need for a TV tuner card. You won’t need to open the case of your PC to install any additional equipment.

Recording TV Onto Your PC

Tradition implies that you should continue paying large monthly fees for cable access. It also encourages people to remain captive to the schedule of a limited menu of shows to which you have access. In reality, you can have much more for less. “TV on your PC” software catapults you into an environment from which you can record and watch live TV shows from thousands of sources. Plus, you can do so without paying a monthly fee or having to install hardware into your computer. One simple download can expand your television choices a hundredfold.

Just a few years ago, we looked forward into the future envisioning a day and age where we would be able to watch TV shows and movies on our computer at the same quality of TV broadcasts. Today there are so many different ways to watch TV shows and movies on your computer and I want to try and cover as many of them as possible because I believe that this is the way of the future.

Most people are familiar of iTunes or have at least heard of it. Apple released iTunes a few years back as a place where consumers could legally download music. This way the music artists were happy because they were getting paid and the consumer was happy because there was a place they could go to legally download quality music at a very affordable price. In the last few years Apple has also introduced TV shows and movies with the iTunes service.

I think that the TV shows and movies sections of iTunes are often over looked, because people just associate it with music. However recently I have been buying a lot of TV shows and movies off iTunes (all 3 seasons of Lost, National Treasure and Ratatouille just to name a few) to watch on my laptop when I’m traveling and so far I have been very pleased.

Lets face it, the majority of us have downloaded or watched movies and TV shows illegally over the internet in the past. I think for most people though it wasn’t because they didn’t want to pay for it but it was because they didn’t have the option to pay for a quality version of it. I personally started buying TV shows and movies off iTunes because of the convince. I didn’t have to search the web for 3 hours to find a crappy quality version of some show online. I could go to iTunes, buy it, and within 5 minutes it was downloaded and on my computer ready for me to watch.

The iTunes software is easy to download and install, and just as easy to use. One thing that Apple is known for is the usability and simplicity of their products, and this can be seen with iTunes. If you have never used iTunes before it won’t take you very long to learn how to get around.

With iTunes 7 Apple introduced something called Cover Flow which allows you to browse through your entire library of songs, movies, and TV shows visually by their covers. This is one of my favorite features of iTunes and looks beautiful if you have a video ipod or a new iPod Touch. Traditional ways to sort and browse your songs are built in as well such as list view for example.

The only downside of iTunes I have found so far is the fact that browsing the iTunes store can be slow sometimes. I’m not really sure if this is just my internet connection or a problem on Apple’s end however sometimes it can be annoying when you click “buy” and it takes about 3 minutes for anything to happen. This happens rarely enough though that it isn’t a major problem.

Overall iTunes is a great option for those looking to download tv shows and movies legally. Although most major studios haven’t signed on to iTunes for movies yet, most television shows can be found there for download. If you have the Apple TV you can watch all your downloads on your television as well. If you are looking to watch live TV channels on your computer you may want to check out something like My New Satellite TV.

Verdict: If your a guy and want to watch TV on the internet as well as movies on demand and adult entertainment than you NEED to check out John Q.

Awhile back we posted our first impressions of a relatively new internet television service that provided exclusive content for men. John Q TV offers all of your favorite manly channels online such as Comedy Central, Spike TV, ESPN, and even Playboy and Hustler channels if you are into adult entertainment.

This is really the first and only internet TV service we have come across that is specifically designed for men so at first we weren’t really sure what to expect. Basically how the service works is you sign up for a membership on the website www.JohnQ.com. You get a three day trial to the service for around $5 which was pretty reasonable.

It only takes about two minutes to get through the sign up process and then you are good to go. Unlike other TV on your PC or Live Internet TV services, with JohnQ there is no software to download, everything is viewed through your web browser which makes life a lot easier. This way you don’t have to worry about going through an installation process or ever updating any software, you just start your web browser, go to JohnQ.com, Sign in and your good to go.

Once we created an account and got situated with that we were logged in and I was immediately impressed with the amount of content and features the John Q service had available. The content is divided in a few sections, the actual TV channel streams are in one section, video on demand in another section for the 18+ adult entertainment (called after hours) as well.

In the television section John Q has literally thousands of different TV shows, clips, and trailers available for you to access and watch at any time. The quality of the shows is a lot better than something you would find on YouTube, you actually feel like your watching television on your computer which I find is rare with these TV on your PC services.

John Q has over 3,000,000 movies and videos in the on demand section. Now thats a lot of content. Although we obviously couldn’t watch everything John Q was offering what we did watch were the same shows that you find on television. Overall we were very impressed with the video on demand section and it works the same was as the on demand that you may have with your digital cable or satellite service.

One thing you will notice about John Q immediately especially if your a guy is that everywhere you look there are girls, girls and more girls. John Q has a whole section called after hours which is loaded with full adult movies that you can watch. This is a feature that is unique to John Q, there are no other TV on your PC services that really offer anything like this. If you are not looking for adult content however, don’t worry – we found that John Q still has plenty to offer in the other sections.

Overall we really enjoyed checking out John Q Internet TV for Men. Every now and then you come across a service that is innovative and just gives you a good feeling inside, well this is that service. John Q is an awesome service with a ton of content at a very affordable price.

You can check out John Q and Sign Up Here

Over the past few years I have been getting more and more fed up with Microsoft Windows and my PC. About a month ago I decided it was about time to replace my PC completely and I ended buying a Mac. So far I love it! There is of course a downside and that is that the old software that I used to watch television on my computer only works on PC, I needed to go out hunting for other ways to watch live TV on my new Macbook Pro.

By doing a simple search in Google for “How to Watch TV Online With a Mac” I found tens if not hundreds of potential methods, however after experimenting and testing them out, I found that a few really stood out and the others were either still in early development or just mediocre.

How to Watch Live Internet TV on Your Mac

<img src="http://satellitetvguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/netflix.jpg" alt="" title="netflix" width="215" height="201" style="border: 1px solid #cccccc;"class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1466" />

The best way to watch TV on a Mac is through Netflix. Although you can’t watch “live” TV through Netflix, they have thousands of episodes of TV shows and movies available to watch right on your computer or on DVD. Episodes of some popular shows like Heroes appear on Netflix the day after they air on TV. I use Netflix to catch up on whole seasons of TV shows and it saves me a ton of money because then I don’t have to buy them.

You can sign up for a 2 week free trial of Netflix here.

Another great way to watch TV on a Mac is with the Real SuperPass. The Real Superpass allows you to watch Prime Time TV Shows, Movies, News and Sports right from your computer. One thing I really like about the SuperPass is their large selection of on demand content. The RealSuperPass also allows you to watch reality TV content that they can’t play on TV.

Real SuperPass currently has a 2 week free trial available.

The third way to watch TV through the Internet on a Mac is a new service called Joost. Joost is a start-up Internet television company that appears to have a lot of potential. They are attempting to start the first true company to compete with Cable and Satellite companies by delivering television through an Internet connection. Joost is still in early beta but you can download the Joost client for free if you have an Intel based Mac. You can read my review of Joost Here.

Overall I wasn’t too impressed with the quality of the picture through Joost, however I do have high expectations and I’m sure it will improve once they get all the kinks worked out. We all know that the future of television is iTV or Internet TV so it looks like Joost is laying the foundation for that to really take off in the near future.

How to Watch Videos on Your Mac

If you are looking to download and watch movies on your Mac (legally) there are really 2 options. You can rent movies from Netflix and watch them on your computer (as well as have them delivered to your door to watch on your TV). I personally use the Netflix approach just because I am usually only interested in watching movies once, so renting works for me.

If you are looking to buy movies to watch on your Mac I recommend using iTunes, which you probably are already using for music. iTunes has a large catalog of movies that you can rent and buy. The advantage I have found to using iTunes is that you can watch the movies you buy or rent on your video iPod, iPod Touch, or iPhone.

How to Watch Cable or Satellite on Your Mac

If you are looking to turn your Mac in to a DVR and watch your pre-existing Cable or Satellite television on your Mac you probably want to check out EyeTV. EyeTV basically allows you to watch Cable or Satellite on your computer and allows you to record these programs to your hard drive so you can play them back any time you want. The EyeTV hardware looks like a USB Thumb Drive with a USB connector on one end and a coaxial cable attachment on the other. You plug your cable or satellite into one end, the other end into your computer and your good to go. EyeTV seems like a pretty practical and straight forward solution.

If you are a huge sports buff like I am you are always trying to catch this weeks game. However in this day an age we are all so busy with work and other activities and it seems like its harder then ever to be able to sit down on a Sunday and watch a football game. I’m constantly working on my computer both at home and at the office so when I started to hear about people watching football and sports games on the internet I was intrigued. I started to look into it more and I found quite a few different ways you can watch the NFL, NBA, MLB and other sports online.

1. Live-Satellite-Network.com

The first and probably the best way I found to watch sports online is through a service called Live-Satellite-Network.com. This service allows you to watch thousands of channels through software that you download and install on your computer. You can watch channels like ESPN right on your computer. The service is easy to use and very inexpensive to buy. I highly recommend checking it out. You can find a complete review of Live-Satellite-Network that we posted previously here.

2. JohnQ Internet TV for Men

The second way you can watch sports games on your computer is through JohnQ TV for Men. This is a service similar to Live-Satellite-Network.com however its targeted exclusively at men. The JohnQ service allows you to watch premium sports and movie channels through the internet.

JohnQ has channels like ESPN and the NFL Network. Probably the best part about JohnQ is the quality of the channels. If you are looking to watch your favorite NFL team in the clearest picture possible over the internet, JohnQ is probably the way to go. You can read more about JohnQ TV for Men Here.

3. DirecTV NFL Sunday Ticket Online

If you are really into Football and have DirecTV Sunday Ticket you can now watch most of the games right from your computer. DirecTV started broadcasting most of their Sunday Ticket games through their website that all Sunday Ticket subscribers can access at no additional cost.

Although this is only available to those with DirecTV its definitely one of the best ways to watch sports online. This only paves the way for other competing cable and satellite companies who will also start offering sports broadcasts and shows online.

4. ChannelChooser.com
One free alternative to watching sports online is through http://www.channelchooser.com/ . This website allows you to watch a number of sports related channels directly in your web browser. Although ChannelChooser.com doesnt have a very large selection of channels and the picture quality isn’t quite as good as Live-Satellite-Network.com and JohnQ TV, its hard to argue with free.

5. The Sports League Official Website

If you are into the Football, Basketball, Baseball or Hockey and you are looking to take a free approach to watching sports online you can watch game highlights and clips on the actual leagues websites. NFL.com probably has the best website, it allows you to watch the game plays and stats in real time through an advanced flash application, the technology behind the whole thing is pretty amazing. The other sports league websites such as MLB.com, NBA.com and NHL.com have similar features and allow you to watch highlights, clips, and short videos.

Over the past few months I have been reviewing pretty much every piece of software out there that lets you watch TV on your computer. Although there are a ton of options for watching live tv on your PC out there, its important to choose the one thats right for you.

Free-Satellite-Network.com lets you watch live tv on your pc through software that you install, with no hardware required. Adult Swim
HDTV & HTDV2

You also get all of your local channels, premium movie channels as well as On Demand content just like on cable. Free-Satellite-Network really pushes on the fact that all you need is an internet connection for their software to work, so I decided to put it to the test.

I purchased and downloaded the software from their website which was fairly easy to navigate and use. They have a few different membership options available, you can either purchase the software for a one time fee, or pay monthly. Installing the software only took a few minutes (probably around 3 minutes is my estimate) however on Windows Vista it may take longer.

Once I installed the software, I put in the username and password that I signed up for the service with. The software then instantly connected and presented me with a guide of a ton of different channels to choose from.

After selecting Comedy Central, it took a second for it to connect to the live tv stream however when it did I was pretty impressed. The quality was a lot better than I was expecting. When you think of streaming television on the internet you often think of those little video boxes on websites or youtube. The television picture I received through this however took up most of the screen and was very clear. After we browsed around a bit we found that some channels are clearer than others but for the most part its not a big deal.

One feature that sets this software apart from its competitors is the fact that it gives you the option to record programs and has video on demand features that turns your PC into a DVR. This allows you to record programs and also pause and rewind live TV. Another great additional feature is the ability to listen to Digital Radio, even though this isn’t groundbreaking it is a nice feature to have integrated into the software.

Overall the software and service was very easy to use. One thing I do want to mention however is that you NEED a broadband internet connection like cable internet or DSL for this to work. Most people these days have broadband though (if you don’t you reaallly need to upgrade) so this really isn’t a problem.

We have been reviewing a lot of TV on Your PC software recently, but today we are going to take the whole TV on your PC thing in a new direction. Getting a TV Tuner Card is an alternative to watching television through the internet. A TV Tuner Card is a piece of hardware that allows you to watch cable television directly on your PC. I have had a few TV Tuner Cards over the years, and they are great if you want to watch your cable service on a PC. They also allow you to record television shows, turning your PC into a DVR which is a really useful feature.

Selecting the Right Card

Summary: I currently recommend the WinTV HVR 1600. This card allows you to watch HD broadcasts on your PC, and includes a remote and easy to use software.

When looking for any piece of computer hardware you want to make sure that it will work with the computer you have and make sure that it has the right features and will provide the performance you are looking for. In the case of TV Tuner Cards, there are really two different types of cards, PCI and PCI express. Before buying a card you need to find out if your motherboard supports PCI express which is about 16 times faster than PCI. If it does than a card that supports PCI Express is the obvious choice. If not, don’t worry TV tuner cards are not like graphics cards and there really isnt much of a difference when it comes to just watching television on your PC.

One thing that is worth mentioning is that some of the current generation of TV Tuner Cards can’t handle HD broadcasts so if you are looking to watch HD television on your PC, make sure you find a card that can receive HD digital cable, not just over the air HD broadcasts.

A great card that can do pretty much everything is the WinTV HVR 1600. This powerful card and allows you to watch ATSC high definition digital TV in full 1080i HD or traditional analog cable. The card comes bundled with a remote that you can control the TV tuner software with. The WinTV HVR 1600 will only work with Windows. If you want a card that can receive HD broadcasts, and comes with a remote and powerful software, this is a good choice.

For those who don’t want to open up their computer…

If you want a quick and easy way to start watching TV on your PC I recommend looking into the WinTV HVR-1950 External USB HDTV Tuner/Video Recorder, which is an external TV Tuner that is ready to go out of the box. You just plug it into your computer with a USB cable and your good to go.

Hauppauge has also just released a next generation TV tuner the WinTV-HVR-1800 which is a PCI Express card that supports HD broadcast. This card has an NTSC tuner for analog TV broadcasts and a ATSC tuner for digital broadcasts. If you are looking for a top of the line card, you should definitely check this one out.

Personally I shop at Amazon or Newegg, they usually have the best deals on most computer hardware, so your best bet is to check there first. You should be able to pick up a decent card for around $65.00 (as stated above, if you want a card that supports HD it will cost more). Some of the top of the line cards are a few hundred dollars, however I would only recommend getting one of these if you are doing professional video capturing and editing.

The great thing about Amazon and Newegg is that they are not only cheap, but they ship your items ridiculously fast, I’ve gotten my items in one business day before with just the standard ground shipping.

Installation

Once you have your card, you will need to install it in your computer. If you arn’t a technical person or a computer guru, then installation may be a bit tricky, however its not really that bad. There are basically 4 steps when you are installing a TV tuner card. I’ve simplified the process a bit, however as long as you follow the instructions that comes with your card, and use this as a general guide as well, you should be fine.

Step 1 – Hardware Installation
First you must install the card in your computer. To do this you must open the case of your computer up and insert the card into a PCI or PCI Express slot. These slots are easy to find and should be near the base of your motherboard, if you have a graphics card or sound card they will be plugged into one of these slots as well (there are usually 3 PCI slots and 1 PCI Express slot.) Once you plug the card in close back up your computer case.

Step 2 – Connect a Video Cable to Your Computer
This step is the easiest. After you have installed the card in your computer you need to plug a cable that will transmit the television signal, if you have cable television you should be able to plug a coaxial cable directly into the TV tuner card you have just installed. Your card may support other types of video in so its not really limited to a coaxial cable, however that seems to be the most common.

Step 3 – Install the Software / Drivers
After you have connected the cable to your computer, you can now try booting it up. When windows starts it should recognize new hardware and you should get a popup window asking if you want to install this new hardware. Your TV Tuner card should have come with a CD that contains drivers you need to install for the card to work with windows. Insert this CD and install the drivers through the add new hardware interface. If this popup does not come up, and it does not recognize the card, try inserting the CD into your computer and then running the setup program included on the CD.

After you install the Drivers, you may be required to restart your computer, and when you start it back up you should be pretty much good to go

Step 4 – Configure / Fine tune your card
Well you’ve finally made it to the fun part. When you installed the drivers and software in the last step you should have installed a software program that you use with your TV Tuner Card. Start this program up and it should recognize your card and start receiving television signals. You can then adjust any settings / video options to meet your needs.

Your card may have also come with a remote, if so, then you should be able to use it to change channels and what not once you have the software program running and the infared remote receiver plugged into a USB port.

Enjoy watching television on your PC.

I hope this guide has helped, and If you have any additional questions that the guide hasn’t answered, feel free to leave comments below and I will try to answer them ASAP.

Verdict: Highly Recommended, Great Picture Quality, Thousands of Channels, No Monthly Fees.

When I look back, I have used and written about a TON of different programs that let you watch Satellite TV on your PC. Many of those programs were great at the time, however as internet speeds increase and technology advances some of those programs become obsoliet due to poor picture quality. This is not the case with Satellite TV For PC.

Satellite TV for PC’s 2007 Elite Edition, is probably the most advanced and most up to date Satellite TV on Your PC program out there. We were pleasantly surprised at the wonderful picture quality and great features that the software had to offer. The program only takes about 5 minutes to install and then you are good to go. Satellite TV For PC doesn’t require any extra hardware, you just download the software and you are ready to go. The programs interface is simple, yet easy to use and is loaded with features – and we mean loaded, this is one powerful piece of software.

Our favorite thing about the Satellite TV for PC software is the fact that there are no subscription fees. I love to watch television on my computer while I work and the fact that I get all the channels you get with premium cable and satellite services for free makes me feel all warm inside for some reason. I guess thats the feeling you get when you know your saving money.

As for channels, Satellite TV For PC has literally thousands of channels to choose from. Some of the channels include, CNN, CNBC, ESPN and FOX. There are channels for just about everything, so no matter what you are into there will be channels you will enjoy. The program also includes family friendly channels, and has parental controls so if your kids use it you can rest assured that they are watching appropriate content and programming.

Overall I loved Satellite TV For PC – 2007 Elite Edition, I think it moves Satellite TV on your PC forward in a really great direction. I will be recommending this software because of the great software, large number of channels, and the fact that there are no subscription fees. If you are looking for Satellite TV, go for this program – its a real jem.

JohnQ TV is a new service that allows you to watch television and movies on your PC, with a twist – its targeted completely at men. I think this is a great idea, because most of the other services have a ton of family channels and movies targeted at women, something that some of us would never watch. This service gives men the channels they want to watch like ESPN, Spike TV, Comedy Central and HBO, stuff that guys like to watch (no lifetime, sorry). The service also has a good amount of sports programming and specific sports channels like the NFL Network. JohnQ TV also has a ton of movies that you also get through the service as well.

I think the thing that I like most about these television on your PC services is the fact that you don’t pay any subscription fees like with satellite or cable service. The only thing you need to buy is the software, and after that you never pay for anything else. We have reviewed quite a few different Satellite Television on your PC services, and this one looks pretty promising. The fact that JohnQ TV has really great channels and programming along with easy to use software really sets it apart from the other services. The website says that it only takes about 3 minutes to sign up. A good amount of the TV on your PC software is complicated, so the easy to use software and interface really makes this service something to look in to.

For men like myself who are at their computer a lot working, playing games, or just browsing the internet, this service is definitely something to check out. I am usually at my computer 5-6 hours a day, and after awhile you just don’t feel like listening to music anymore, so this is the perfect solution. The service really has it together, and has a TON of content (channels, movies, etc..) to enjoy, and keep you entertained. We will be posting our full review the JohnQ TV service in the near future.

Verdict: Easy To Use, Great Channels, No Monthly Frees. TV On Your PC Made Simple.

Learn more about My New Satellite TV Here

A few days ago we posted our initial impressions and introduction of the My New Satellite TV service. This service allows you to watch Satellite Television and Programming on your computer. In the past, we have found that Satellite TV programs like this can often be sophisticated and confusing, littered with technical terminology and jargon. After we downloaded and Installed My New Satellite TV, we were surprised at just how easy the program was to use, and install.

Installation took about 5 minutes and then we were on our way. There is no extra hardware required, you just install the software you download from their website on your computer. Even from the initial installation, the program looked really promising, I’ve been waiting a long time for someone to come out with decent software that allows you to watch tv on your pc. I can’t even count how many different programs I have tried to use that promised the same thing as this, but didn’t deliver.

My New Satellite TV has a lot of great programming in channels. When we say a lot of channels, we mean a LOT of channels. There are two different versions of the program that you can buy. The cheaper of the two ($49.95) comes with 1,500 Channels. The better version ($59.95) includes 2,500 channels! With both versions, there are channels for just about everything you can imagine, and the best part is they are the same channels you have to pay for to get on regular Satellite and Cable. This is probably the biggest advantage of the My New Satellite TV software, you pay once for the software and thats the only fee you ever pay. There is no monthly cost, no subscription fees, nothing.

Although the My New Satellite TV Software is easy to use, it also comes loaded with features. Since you receive so many channels its important to be able to sort through them by category, language or country. We would like to see a few more sorting options in newer versions (this is really one of the only cons we could find in the software, and trust me we looked hard) Despite the lack of sorting options, the sorting is a great feature and is sort of like a built in TV guide. There are a WIDE variety of channels to choose from, everything from kids programming to music, family, movie channels, sports channels and more.

We have found that another huge advantage of My New Satellite TV was the fact that you can get television channels from anywhere in the world. This is great for people who’s primary language isn’t English or for those who watch Soccer, which is a worldwide sport and often played in many different country and carried on many different channels.

If you have children, you know just how important parental controls are. My New Satellite TV comes with a built in ability to lock channels and make sure your kids are watching appropriate programming. The parental controls basically work the same was as with your Satellite or Cable service, you set a password and select which channels you want to lock.

Conclusion

Overall we give My New Satellite TV an A. We have never seen Satellite TV on Your PC software that was put together so well. As we said in our initial impressions, the price for the software is low, and there are no subscription fees, which is great. We are really impressed with My New Satellite TV, and I will be keeping the software as I said in the initial impressions post. If you are looking to watch Satellite TV on your PC, this is the way to go.
