EW’s Michael Ausiello broke a MAJOR spoiler about The CW’s upcoming reboot of “Melrose Place”. As they did with the latest installment of “90210″, The CW announced it would be bringing back some of the original characters from the first “Melrose Place.” What they didn’t reveal was that they would be killing off one of those characters in the first episode of the new series.

Aussiello confirmed on Friday that the dead body found floating face down in Melrose’s trademark pool in the opening minutes of the new series belongs to Laura Leighton’s Sydney. Ausiello was told her death will set into motion a season-long murder mystery that finds nearly all of the show’s main characters suspects at one point or another, particularly Syd’s ex, Michael (Thomas Calabro.)

Even though Sydney dies within the first ten minutes of the show, she will be featured prominently in the first season. An insider confirmed to Ausiello that Sydney will be seen via flashback in multiple episodes.The flashbacks will explain where she’s been and what really happened after she was killed (or appeared to be killed) in the original series.

Heather Locker was apparently pitched the storyline first so it would have been Amanda Woodward’s corpse floating in the pool. But Locklear nixed the offer so producers approached Leighton.
