As “The Abducted” opens, An old man shaves his head, washes his face, and picks up a metal mask to wear before kidnapping an eight-year-old boy named Max from his bedroom in New Yonkers.

Olivia asks her cab driver friend, Henry, to help her get into the Department of Defense facility on Liberty Island. He agrees to borrow his cousin’s boat and give her a ride to the island.

Because the Peter Bishop Act of 1991 dictates that every child abducted is to be considered a possible Fringe event, the team investigates Max’s kidnapping. Lincoln analyzes some residue on the boy’s closet: It’s sugar, which the Candyman secretes through his skin: he’s back.

Walternate talks to Colonel Broyles, who says that it’s been four years since the Candyman took his son, Christopher. Broyles did get him back, but he wasn’t a little boy anymore. Broyles wants Olivia back for the case too and Walternate says she’ll be back soon.

Apparently, every two years, the Candyman kidnaps a child between ages seven and nine for 48 hours. But all of them have acute organ deterioration, depleted immune systems, or even had cancer when they get back. Olivia notices incisions on the backs of the kids’ necks too.

The Candyman always has a mask on but some victims remember him as old, some remember him as young.

Olivia realizes that the victims’ conditions are also symptoms of old age. Aging involves the pituitary gland, which can be accessed through the back of the neck, where all of the kids have scars. She begins to realize the Candyman is stealing their youth. They speculate that using some kind of processed pituitary hormones would cause serious side effects, like possibly secreting sugar in his sweat?

Chris tells Olivia he remembers the men’s voices and part of the prayer he would recite. Meanwhile, Walternate tells Broyles to pull this Olivia out of the field tomorrow as she is no longer needed.

Henry calls Olivia and tells her to be at the Red Hook Marina in Brooklyn at 10 tonight.

Charlie traces the prayer to the Astoria Church in Queens, run by Reverend Marcus, who gives them the roster from his men’s group as a list of possible suspects.

When Olivia interviews a young man, Wyatt Toomey, he accidentally gives himself away. She calls for back up, shoots him, finding Max in the process.

Wyatt was making an age-regression serum from the kids’ hormones, but how did he figure it out? Olivia realizes someone showed him how, and it must have been Marcus. At Broyles’ house, Marcus shows up for Christopher. Broyles bursts in and shoots the pastor.

After Olivia slips and says FBI during the bust, Broyles realizes that she knows who she is.

Henry takes Olivia to Liberty Island, and she gets to her own side, but she’s being pulled back. Desperate, Olivia begs a cleaning women in a store to do something for her, even though it sounds insane. Then she’s yanked to the Other Side where Walternate orders his soldiers to sedate her.

Meanwhile, Peter and Bolivia are in bed, watching “Casablanca.” Peter gets a call from the cleaning woman who says she just saw a woman disappear in front of her. “Her name was Olivia. She has a message for you: She’s trapped in the other universe.”

As last night’s episode of Fringe opened, Senator James Van Horn’s car was hit by a truck. Broyles meets meets hima nd his wife at the hospital. While doctors worked on the Senator, Newton charges in and starts shooting. Newton wheels the senator out, then as Broyles comes after him, Newton shoots the senator in the eye and flees. The senator bleeds mercury, turns out he’s a shapeshifter!

At Massive Dynamic, Peter tells Nina about his doubts that Walter can handle being the owner but she thinks Walter is brilliant.

Walter examines the shapeshifter and says that it is half mechanic. Peter notices the single shot through the eye. Walter thinks it might be the location of a power source and tries to fix it.

Bolivia calls Newton, who explains that Van Horn was a senior operative and knew about her so he had to kill him. He goes on to explain that her mission involves gaining Peter’s complete trust and that he may know that she is not really Olivia.

In the hospital, Walter pokes around in the shapeshifter’s eye socket and its hand twitches. Astrid brings a box of stuff to Walter so he can use visual stimuli to help find the shapeshifter’s data storage unit.

While he works on that, Bolivia and Peter search Van Horn’s office. Newton calls Bolivia, who tells him that the shapeshifter is alive and at the same time, Petere realizes Van Horn knew everything about all of them.

In Yonkers, New York, a man named Ray, who is also a shapeshifter, gets a visit form Newton who tells him to retrieve the other shapeshifter’s memory chip.

Walter wants to use Patricia, the senator’s wife to help them revive the shapeshifter but Bolivia objects, and he insists they ask anyway. Patricia agrees to help and as she talks to the Van Horn shapeshifter, Walter detects increased neural activity at the base of its spine. But they stop after the shapeshifter starts reciting numbers and words that Patrica says is their anniversary.

Bolivia suggests everyone take a break to get them out of the lab but Walter realizes that the shapeshifters brain may be in his ass and heads back to the lab, just as Ray is arriving.

Ray walks into Walter’s lab, pulls a gun on him, and takes the chip from Van Horn’s spine. Walter stabs him and they struggle. Peter realizes Ray was a shapeshifter and tries to identify him from a video of him leaving the elevator.

Ray gives Newton the chip and Newton shoots him and puts him in the trunk of his car as Peter and Bolivia pull up, firing their guns.

After they chase him in his car, Newton crashes. Bolivia takes the chip from him but tells Peter she didn’t find it.

Bolivia visits Newton in his cell and gives him a microchip, he eats it and dies.

Bolivia texts Peter, asking him to come over and talk but when he gets there, all she does is make out with him. Will Peter realize she’s not who she appears to be?

As the show opens, a man in Hoboken, NJ seems to be crating a series of mishaps on the sidewalk. As a result, a bus driver, hits a blonde woman crossing the street but the man just walks away.

Back at the Fringe headquarters, Olivia’s back and Broyles tells Walternate that she seems like Olivia Dunham. Walternate confirms that, when tested, she responds like their Agent Dunham, explaining that Olivia can move between worlds without harm.

Charlie briefs the Fringe team in the van, telling them that for two days in a row, a Liberty Metro bus has run a red light and killed someone. It’s an interesting statistical anomaly. At the accident site, Agent Lee picks up a blue ballpoint pen near a mailbox. Charlie and Olivia are amazed – no one uses pens these days.

They find a pen near a mailbox which they are surprised about because no one uses pens anymore. It is near a mailbox where a bike messenger swerved to avoid a guy bending over, which led to the fatal crash. They realize they pen could have started a chain reaction.

Agent Lee sees a pen, just like the one from the second accident, in a photo of the first accident. At a third accident scene, Olivia sees another blue pen and she spots a man, the one from Jersey, on the pedestrian bridge above. As an ambulance comes down the street, a guy wearing headphones runs in front of it and is killed. Olivia confronts the man on the bridge, but he escapes.

The man, Milo, goes home where his sister Madeline begs him to “follow the rules.”

Olivia finds that both the second victim, Jillian Foster, and the first, Cole Arnett, were connected to brain research at Bryant Hospital and while they are there, Charlie realizes they are all writing with ballpoint pens.

Bryant’s chief medical officer, Dr. Levin, explains that many patients find pen and paper easier to use than digital interfaces. When he learns who the victims were – including the third, Jeffrey Mayer, he tells Olivia and Charlie about a drug study they did to increasing intelligence. Five months ago, Milo had an IQ of 56 but became a math genius after only one treatment.

The subjects were suppose to return to their natural statin but Milo didn’t want to. So he killed Cole, his caseworker, and then Jillian, who planned to regress Milo. Mayer was a recovery specialist who brought back patients that were missing. His next targets are Olivia and Charlie.

Madeline tells Olivia that she doesn’t know where Milo is but after some bonding, she finally confesses that her brother is at the Patricia Hotel.

Charlie thinks it’s a trap, and he’s right. Outside the hotel, Olivia chases Milo, running past a sign of a construction worker with an inhaler. Suddenly, a load of cement blocks falls toward her but Olivia swerves, surprising Milo, who’s using an inhaler. She grabs him, but she can’t breathe.

Charlie shoots Milo in the leg, handing Olivia his own inhaler. Later, he asks why she ignored the blinking sign which means compromised air quality but she cant’ explain it.

Later, when Olivia is alone, Peter appears and tells her she didn’t die because Milo couldn’t have known she didn’t know the protocol. Olivia saw Walter, and thinks she’s seeing Peter because she’s not from this world. Olivia tries to shrug off the Peter hallucination, but he says she can’t forget who she is.

As the Fringe opens, Newton fills in Bolivia on Olivia and her team and removes her sun tattoo to help her blend in. She asks about the job she needs done, and he says he sent a team to the site.

Nearby, a family is tied up in a home while a man is watching TV. In the basement, the guy’s brother and a friend dig up a metal box. When they open it, they both go catatonic. The guy upstairs, finds them, closes the box and runs back upstairs. The family is now bleeding too and the TV has gone to static.

At the lab, Astrid reads William Bell’s obituary to Walter while Broyles and Peter look over the blueprints of the machine from the other side. Peter says that Walternate still needs a couple of parts, one of which happens to be Peter. Broyles asks Walter why the machine needs Peter to work and Walter just says that its dangerous.

The team visits the house of the dead family and Broyles says that he’s getting fingerprints off the two dead diggers. Broyles figures out a third thief took whatever they dug up.

Bolivia tells Newton that two of his men died, as he had planned, but the third one took off with the device. Newton says that he only hired two men, and no one can withstand that thing. They agree they need to find him.

Nina joins Peter and Walter for the reading of Bell’s will at Massive Dynamic. Nina gets a small bell in a glass case, and both she and Walter get envelopes. Broyles calls Peter to see if he is at one of the thief’s apartments, Peter doesn’t know what he is talking about. Looks like Bolivia didn’t pass on the message.

Astrid asks Walter how the reading went. He takes a safety deposit box key out of his envelope with a letter that reads, “DON’T BE AFRAID TO CROSS THE LINE.” Walter explains that Bell used to say that only those who risk going too far can know how far they can go.

Suddenly, Walter thinks he knows what happened in the house. He explains that if taken to an ultrasonic extreme, dissonant music could be fatal. You wouldn’t hear any sound because the frequency would be too high. Peter wonders why the third man wasn’t affected. Meanwhile, the third man goes to Bolivia’s. She pulls her gun and orders him inside. Then she realizes that he’s deaf. That’s why he didn’t die.

Bolivia gives the box to Newton, who takes it to the subway and pays a guy to watch it.

Bolivia shoots Blake’s brother. Later, Peter drops by and she drags the body into the bathroom. He says he just can’t forgive Walter. Bolivia sees blood seeping out from under the bathroom door and starts kissing Peter until both their phones ring.

On the subway platform, Broyles tells the team that security cameras showed a small man walking into the tunnel with a metallic box and realize that the box was what the men were looking for. Bolivia makes Peter temporarily deaf by firing her gun next to each of his ears so he can get the box. Peter tell them that there is a piece of the weapon inside the box. He decides to disarm the device. He stops the signal, but the train is there and Bolivia pulls him to safety.

Peter realizes that Walternate’s agents might be looking for the missing pieces over here but Broyles wonders why there’d be pieces here.

As the show comes to a close, Walter shows Astrid what Bell left him: Massive Dynamic!

Finally, Bolivia types a message to Walternate: “Peter has first piece. He is actively engaged.” Walternate responds, “Well done. Move on to phase two.”

She explains to Dr. Anderson that she comes from another universe and that this is not her home.

Dr. Anderson thinks Olivia is Bolivia- since they are on the other side. She thinks Olivia’s mind created this fantasy to process the trauma she’s suffered. While under anesthesia, she mumbles Peter’s name, when they ask about it, she explains that her and her team came over the bring him back, but they left her behind.

Meanwhile, Walternate watches video of this session and tells a doctor to continue the sessions, even if it kills her. A soldier escorts Olivia to her “treatment,” which involves injecting the “B-lymphocytes” of Bolivia into Olivia. She fakes a bad reaction, escapes and jumps into New York harbor.

A cab driver, Henry, gives Olivia some new clothes and she realizes she has Bolivia’s tattoo. He drives her to the Brooklyn opera house where her team crossed over and she plans to use the weak spot to get home but when she heads inside, a cop stops her.

She asks Henry to take her to 655 18th St., the address of Massive Dynamic but he’s never heard of it because it doesn’t exist.

When they stop for gas, Lincoln, Bolivia’s team leader is waiting for her, but Olivia disarms him. She shoots the valve off a nearby propane tank, and is able to get away.

Olivia remembers the address of what she thinks is a safe house, come to find out its Boliva’s mother, Marilyn’s house. Olivia insists that she’s not her daughter, then panics because she thought that this would bring her home. Charlie shows up at the house and she leaves with him.

In Walternate’s office, the doctor explains that the adrenaline generated during Olivia’s escape triggered those B-lymphocytes and transferred Bolivia’s memories. Later, Broyles asks Walternate why they had to convince Olivia she’s Bolivia, but Walternate won’t tell him why.

Back in Olivia’s world, Peter gives his statement about what happened Over There. Peter smiles at Bolivia and kisses her. “I’m sure tomorrow something else insane will happen,” he says. “We should rest up while we still can.”

In Fringe season 3, Joshua Jackson just might be the envy of his cast mates since he is the only who isn’t playing two characters.

If you remember, in the Season 2 finale, Peter and Olivia (Anna Torv) finally kissed and she told him that no matter which reality he is from, they belong together. But fans (and Jackson himself) question whether Peter and Olivia are meant to be together or if Peter and Olivia’s alternate universe counterpart are the ones who have the connection.

“What I’m curious about is how invested he’s going to get in Alt-Livia,” Jackson says. “The reason that I think that Olivia and Peter, for the two years that they were together, never quite could figure out how to bridge the gap and find that spark, is because they’re not from the same side.”

I fthey are both fro the alternate universe, it might make more sense for Peter and Alternate Olivia to get together. “The reason why Peter and other-Olivia hit it off so quickly is because all the subterranean stuff that was there between Peter and regular Olivia just feels more natural,” Jackson tells us. “It’s some sort of animal instinct that these two, being from the same side, share. I’d love to see a version where the other Olivia and Peter get really, actually involved in each other as opposed to just the cloak and dagger spy stuff that they’ve got going on now, so that when she’s gone, now he’s a bit conflicted.”

Eventually Peter is going to realize it is alternate Olivia in his world and when that happens, he’ll have some tough decisions to make. “He’s now torn again, between the two worlds, not knowing where his loyalties lie.”

The Fringe team in the parallel universe is alerted about a breach in the system. The alternate versions of Charlie and Olivia (aka Bolivia) go to check it out with another agent, Lincoln Lee, who uses equipment to monitor an “event.”

Charlie discovers a man whose face is covered in tumors in a theater where they are monitoring the event. Bolivia (alt world Olivia) and Lincoln are confused by the man’s belongings. “Who the hell is Jackson?” Lincoln says, looking at the former President on the $20 bill. The alternate world agents do not see Walter, Olivia and two other people as they sneak away and out of the theater.

In a flashback 36 hours earlier Walter watches surveillance footage of Walternate (Walter in the alternate universe) taking Peter to the other side. Walter and Olivia remember that the Observer told him Peter must never go to the other side.

Olivia, Walter and Broyles show Nina the drawing the Observer gave Walter and she recognizes it as William Bell’s technology. In the lab at Massive Dynamic, Brandon explains that to cross over to the Other Side, an entity’s cells need to separate and may not come back together with the same cohesion. Brandon thinks that Bell crossed over so many times that he may be degenerating which probably why he stays on the other side. Nina says that Olivia and the other Cortexiphan kids have the ability to cross over, especially if they work together.

One of the Cortexiphan kids,Nick, knows Olivia as “Olive.” Broyles brings Nick and two others, James and Sally to a new Fringe situation room. The three Cortexiphan subjects recognize Walter as the one who subjected them to tests as children. He asks them to help save Peter.

That night, James goes to a hospital and uses his powers to cure all the dying patients. Nick and Sally retreat to a hotel room and make love with all the power that their abilities have endowed them. Olivia gives her niece Ella a cross on a chain from Olivia’s mother, and Olivia says goodbye to her sister Rachel, not knowing whether she will ever see her again.

Nina sends word to Bell to meet the team crossing over and Broyles fears Olivia doesn’t have a real plan once they reach the Other Side. Walter coaches Olivia, Nick, Sally and James on making their imaginations focus on allowing the universe to slip through them. James collapses as tumors start sprouting up on his face and steam rises from Sally’s body as they realize they made it to the Other Side.

The alternate world Fringe squad examines James’ body as Walter, Olivia, Nick and Sally hide. Bolivia compares James’ $20 currency with hers (which has Martin Luther King, Jr. it) but thinks its a counterfeit.

An alarm is triggered at the alternate universe Department of Defense as the Jackson-faced $20 appears on a screen. Colonel Broyles alerts his agents that the Secretary of Defense wants to see them because of what they have found.

Bolivia, Charlie and Lincoln meet with Walternate who is the secretary of the Department of Defense. He tells them that their Fringe division, which started in 1985 to handle natural environmental disasters caused by holes in the universe, is based on his writings which are actually a lie. The holes were not natural but caused by men and they lead to a parallel earth like theirs. Walternate says that those who attempt to cross over into this world are about to start a war and orders them to capture those who have crossed over.

Peter wakes up in the alternate universe Bishop mansion, after sleeping for three days. Peter gets out of bed and talks to his mother Elizabeth in the kitchen. He explains that he thinks its his fault that his mother in the world committed suicide.

Olivia, Walter and the remaining Cortexiphans are forced to walk across New York in the alt world when they cannot take public transportation without identification. Walter hopes maybe Bell can help Sally, who is stumbling and clearly worn out, once they find him. Her eyes fill with blood. They make their way to Central Park, where Lincoln is waiting with police backup. Walter and Olivia run away but Lincoln shoots Nick. Sally is so upset she forces herself to burst into flames which engulf Lincoln. Bolivia shoots at Walter but he gets away.

Walternate leaves a technical blueprint for Peter. It’s the same weapon in the sketch that the Observer drew for Walter.

As he walks the city streets, Walter realizes he’s been shot and falls near a hospital. Olivia ducks into a phone booth and looks up Bolivia’s address in the digital directory. Meanwhile, Bolivia returns to her apartment and tells her boyfriend Frank about the events of her day. Olivia watches them from the street. She’s startled by William Bell, who says he did not set them up. Bell only just missed them at the park. He warns Olivia that Walter is in trouble and they don’t have much time.

Walternate enters a DoD chamber. The weapon is already built.

After last week’s explosive episode in which Peter learns the truth about himself and turns his back on Walter, “Fringe’s” producers knew they had to explore what effect this would have on the already fragile Walter.

The show’s Executive Producer Jeff Pinkner explains, “The last episode that aired, Peter learned he wasn’t from our universe … and turned his back on Walter [John Noble]. So we knew we wanted to tell an episode that really explored — we have this phenomenal actor in John Noble and this great character in Walter — how that affects Walter before we plunge forward into the end of the season. We came up with a narrative device to really explore Walter’s feelings.”

In the episode, airing tonight, Walter tells a story that casts Olivia (Anna Torv) as a hard-boiled detective and Peter as the tough guy she’s searching for. “We felt it was a way to get across Walter’s [frame of mind] and where his head is right now with his son missing,” fellow EP J.H. Wyman says. “There’s a very good reason why it’s noir. It’s because of [Walter's] own history and things like that, which you’ll see.”

The musical number has more to do with sweeps week and less to do with Walter’s emotional state though. All this week, “FOX Rocks,” will feature some musical element on the network’s most popular shows. (Thursday’s “Bones” murder, for instance, involves a rock ‘n’ roll fantasy camp).

As far as the music, Pinker said, “It really deepened and blew the episode out even further in the direction we were already taking,” he says. “… This episode provided an opportunity to hold a mirror up to Walter’s perspective of the world and these individuals — Olivia, Peter and Astrid [Jasika Nicole] — that he interacts with. We get his fractured take on the world and his condition now that Peter has left. The music really supports the storytelling.”

Here’s a sneak peek at “Fringe’s” film-noirish episode, “Brown Betty,” which airs at tonight at 9 p.m.

The team is called in to handle the investigation. At the scene of the crime, they discover a pod that contains the dead embryo of a third shapeshifter.

The two shapeshifters that are alive assume the teenagers’ identities and meet with Newton in a camera shop. They tell him that the third shapeshifter didn’t survive.

Back in the lab, Walter inspects the embryo well Olivia tries to decode a radio signal that may have originated on the other side. Olivia visits Brandon at Massive Dynamic, who agrees and explains that the two universes’ time lines will be completely in sync within twenty-four hours.

Meanwhile, Newton gives the shapeshifters their orders. One of them questions the validity of the plan without a third shapeshifter but Newton assures them that if it doesn’t work “The Secretary” will be unhappy so they agree to put the plan into motion.

Later at the lab, Peter realizes why Walter has been acting strange. He finds an old family photo that Walter has been carrying around and tells Olivia that he thinks his mother committed suicide.

Newton goes to a local bank, where one of the shapeshifters has assumed the identity of a manager named McCallister. They go down into the bank vault and embed a small device into the flooring.

At the same time, Walter figures out a way to bring the third shapeshifter back to life. It tells the team that it was supposed to meet with Newton, and its intended target was a medical examiner named Daniel Verona, then it died again.

Newton sneaks into the morgue where Verona works by pretending to be a corpse. There, he plants a device identical to the one in the bank. At another location, one of the shapeshifters plants a third device in the electrical box of a telephone pole.

Walter shows Peter and Olivia how he and William Bell were able to transport a car into the other universe by making it vibrate at the proper frequency. He suggests that Newton may be trying the same thing, Peter pulls out a map and triangulates the center of Newton’s portal, it’s a bridge on the Charles River.

The team rushes over to the bridge, and after a shootout with the shapeshifters, Walter prepares a pneumatic hammer that will nullify Newton’s frequency. Peter tells everyone to clear the area, and Olivia pulls Walter back to a safe distance. Newton turns on his harmonic rods, and a shockwave rips across the Charles River. A nearby FBI agent is torn apart by the blast, but Peter is OK. He activates the hammer and sees that Newtom has brought over a man form the other side.

Peter is knocked unconscious by a second shockwave and he wakes up in the hospital. He confronts Walter, asking why he didn’t die on the bridge and realizes he was from the alternate universe, shunning Walter in the process.

In another recovery room, Newton nurses The Secretary who he brought back from the other side.

The next day, Olivia visits Walter at his house and tells him that Peter has disappeared.

In last week’s episode of Fringe, a man inexplicably materialized in the middle of a train car and killed everyone on board.

At the scene, the team notices that all the electronic devices on board the train have been drained of power. Broyles and Peter pull up surveillance footage from the train station to get a look at the suspect.

Walter heads back to the lab where he examines one of the victims’ bodies and discovers that were also drained of all their energy. Looking at the surveillance footage, Olivia tracks the suspect to a coffee shop and finds out that his name is Alistair Peck.

The team goes to Peck’s apartment where they learn that the man is a brilliant professor of Astrophysics at MIT. Peck shows up at the apartment, and he asks them not to confiscate his research. Walter notices that Peck has a shield of copper wiring around his body. Without warning, Peck vanishes and jumps back in time to the train. But, this time, he leaves a fingerprint and Broyles is able to make a successful ID.

The team raids Peck’s apartment again, but all of his research is gone. Peter does find a photo album of Peck with his fiance and a few homemade machine prototypes.

Olivia and Peter meet with Peck’s former MIT colleague who gives them a copy of Peck’s most current research — a study of time travel. Walter examines the work and figures out that Peck’s time jumps are sucking all of energy from the areas where he lands. The longer the jump, the more energy it requires. Olivia realizes that his fiance recently died and realizes that he is probably jumping back in time to try to save her. Walter explains that if their theory is correct, a jump back to the time of the car crash could create a devastating number of casualties.

The team finds Peck and Walter tells him that he cannot jump back to the day his fiance died. But Peck says he can do it in a way in which no one will die. Walter argues that it’s not merely the casualties he’s worried about, and he proceeds to tell Peck how he stole Peter. Walter then confides that, ever since the day he crossed to the other side, he has been looking for a sign of forgiveness from God in the form of a white tulip.
