Well it appears that despite millions of dollars and efforts on all fronts to prep the TV world for the switch over to digital, it appears that we are still not ready. The original date for the switch had been February 17th. That turned out to be a bit too ambitious, as some TV stations were not ready to make that switch and some consumers (where do these consumers live?) had apparently not realized that their TV would suddenly stop functioning.
One has to wonder though what this postponement could cost. President Obama may have wanted to delay the transition, but stations, networks, and distributors had all prepped for the Deb. 17 deadline. This means that in order to push it back until June, they’re looking at hundreds of thousands of dollars in extra costs over the next four months as they pay extra to stay analog.
In the end, it seems that we’ll never get everyone in the country to realize that the switch is going to happen and they may need to do something about it. Putting it off till June won’t stop that, although it could mean some may pick up on the change between now and then. Expect a few ripples when we go digital, but I don’t think it’ll be a huge fiasco.
