ABC has opted not to order more episodes of the freshman supernatural comedy-drama Eastwick and has become the network’s first aired casualty of the new season. The series was based on the John Updike novel from 1984, The Witches of Eastwick, and the 1987 film by the same name. The network will finish production on 13 episodes and plans to run them all.
Eastwick, starring Rebecca Romijn and Lindsay Price, performed dismally in its Wednesday night time slot despite the solid lead-in from Courteney Cox’s new comedy Cougar Town. Last week Eastwick averaged a series-low 1.5 adults 18-49 rating and lost 46% of Cougar’s lead-in viewers. The show finished 0.1 ahead of NBC’s The Jay Leno Show in the time slot.
NBC was in a similar predicament with its drama Trauma which the network axed, though opted for finishing its initial run of episodes.
Eastwick has been bumped for the next two weeks. The CMA Awards will air this Wednesday, followed by an exclusive interview with Janet Jackson on November 18th. This means the first of the six remaining episodes won’t arrive until, at the earliest, November 25th, assuming the network stays with its current schedule.
Besides Eastwick, ABC will also be pulling its upcoming reality show Let’s Dance hosted by Kathy Griffin, which was planned to air on November 23rd.
Sources said ABC had trouble casting the series; a common problem for networks when developing celebrity-driven reality fare. All Let’s Dance promos have been pulled from the network. In place of Let’s Dance, ABC began airing promos for another six-episode reality show entitled Find My Family. The promos aired during Dancing with the Stars last night. Find My Family will air in what would have been Let’s Dance’s slot on Mondays.
For ABC, it’s not all cutting of programming. The network did order five more episodes of the low-rated Christian Slater drama The Forgotten. It’s not a full-season pickup, but it does indicate the network sees potential in the Tuesday night show. That’s good news for Slater, who has been trying to find a television home since his last series, NBC’s My Own Worst Enemy, which was canceled after nine episodes.
