Ronald Emmerich isn’t just satisfied destroying the planet on the big screen; he wants to bring it to television too.

The 2012 director is developing a TV series based on the film. Despite the mammoth fallout from the destruction in 2012 (some have referred to the film and those like it as “destruction porn”), Emmerich says that there is “”plenty to do in a TV show.”

“The plan is that it is 2013 and it’s about what happens after the disaster. It is about the resettling of Earth. That is very, very fascinating,” says Emmerich. “When you normally see disasters, you always see the aftermath; movies actually show it happening. People are fascinated.”

2012 producer Mark Gordon is expected to be on board the project as executive producer. He also works on Grey’s Anatomy. The 53-year-old has shopped the program around with networks. “[ABC] will have an opening in their disaster-related programming after Lost ends,” Gordon says.

“After the movie, there are some people who survive and the question is how will these survivors build a new world and what will it look like. That might make an interesting TV series.”

Gordon Added: “When I see Roland destroy things, I howl because it’s fun. It’s not depressing,” said Gordon. “He shoots these scenes with a certain kinds of filter that as terrifying as it is, it’s magical at the same time. It’s not gritty, it’s clean. It’s pop.”

Despite trashing the planet time after time, Emmerich won’t do it through the use of mutants, caped crusaders or anybody from the graphic novel world. “I don’t like superheroes,” he said. “And that takes out about 60% of the big movies Hollywood makes. And I don’t like very much fantasy, and I don’t like making famous books into movies. That’s another 20% cut. So it’s a very narrow field that I can service.”

ABC declined comment on the new series.

2012 hits theaters on November 13th.
